The Innovation Education Course

The IFA Innovation Business Development Program is a fertilizer industry-specific deep dive into the insights and analysis for those wanting to grow their knowledge of the innovation ecosystem.

Whether an aspiring entrepreneur, recent graduate, or upskilling executive, the concise, topic-focused expert lessons will provide you with an expanded foundation to support your career development across the sector of plant nutrition.

The Innovation Education Course is a workshop series built as part of IFA’s Innovation Hub Business Development Program, created to close a gap that founders in the plant nutrition space run into again and again: deep expertise in fertilizers and agriculture, but little exposure to how the industry actually does business, how deals get structured, how corporates evaluate partners, and what it takes to turn a strong idea into something investable and scalable.

workshop series

A structured, industry-facing e-learning program developed in partnership with IFA’s Innovation Hub, designed to give startup founders, innovation managers, and early-stage entrepreneurs a deep understanding of the global fertilizer industry, so they can move faster, pitch better, and build more effectively within it. The course draws on real sessions delivered by industry experts, scientists, investors, and IFA specialists. It’s organized into seven modules, spanning twenty-one lessons and approximately 195 minutes of content, with each lesson self-contained and designed for focused learning in five to fifteen minutes.

Opens with the food security case for innovation and an intro to IFA itself, then covers how fertilizer innovation is unfolding across seven global regions and the seven most promising innovation frontiers where startups and IFA can collaborate.

Building and delivering an investor pitch, covering the Why-What-How structure and how to tailor it to different audiences.

An introduction to IFA’s Market Intelligence work, followed by a deep dive into global fertilizer supply (production, trade, geopolitics, decarbonization) and demand (affordability, regional variation, five-year outlook) for nitrogen, phosphate, and potash.

Why specialty fertilizers are the industry’s most innovative segment, a walkthrough of each product category, and the size of the opportunity, a 19 billion dollar segment growing 6 percent a year, along with where the biggest innovation gaps remain.

The pillars of successful corporate venturing and the red flags that kill startup-corporate pilots before they start, followed by how to build a disciplined fundraising roadmap and avoid the valuation traps that hit startups in 2023-24.

Why rigorous field testing underpins credible agtech innovation, IFA’s sustainability mission and action pillars, the sector’s decarbonization roadmap, and a look at the Sustainable Fertilizer Academy as a resource for startups.

A four part deep dive into patent strategy, what to patent versus protect as a trade secret, the legal traps around NDAs and joint development agreements, and how to use a patent portfolio offensively in fundraising and competitive positioning.

Who it's for

Startups in the fertilizer space. The course is built around the current Business Development Program cohort, the founders and teams moving through Cultivate Challenge. It’s also open more broadly to any IFA member through IFA Campus, under the Innovation Hub section, for anyone who wants the same grounding in business development even outside the accelerator track.

Why it matters

Cultivate Challenge identifies and backs strong entrepreneurial talent, this course is what gives that accelerator a real curriculum behind it, not just mentorship and a competition. For the wider IFA membership, it’s also a reason to explore the Innovation Hub.

How to access it

Cultivate Challenge cohort members get their course access set up directly as part of the program, no separate signup needed. IFA members can reach it through IFA Campus inside IFA’s members portal, alongside the rest of the Innovation Hub’s content. It’s also available as a standalone course, open to anyone interested in these topics, no cohort or membership required to enroll.
