Building on the success of our pilot program in West Africa, the Sustainable Fertilizer Academy is now expanding across the entire African continent through a new partnership with the Africa Fertilizer Industry Development Association (AFIDA).

In 2024, the SFA and the West African Fertilizer Association (WAFA) launched the first university workshops in Nigeria and Liberia, reaching more than 1,000 students across nine universities and advancing to additional countries such as Mali and Côte d’Ivoire. These workshops, delivered by trained WAFA facilitators, focused on key sustainability topics including nutrient stewardship, responsible fertilizer use, soil health, biodiversity, and precision agriculture.

Building on this momentum, the SFA–AFIDA partnership will introduce similar immersive, 1–2-day workshops at agricultural universities and training centers across all African sub-regions. Implementation will take place in phases amongst all regions (East, Southern, Central, and West Africa), to ensure regional relevance and alignment with local needs. Facilitators trained by AFIDA will deliver curated SFA modules supported by region-specific materials.

This Africa-wide initiative aims to strengthen local capacity, equip the next generation of agronomists and agricultural professionals with practical sustainability skills, and support the continent’s broader goals for resilient and climate-smart food systems.
